What it is
A pip is the standard small step in a forex price. For most pairs it is the fourth decimal place (0.0001), and for pairs with the Japanese yen it is the second decimal place (0.01). The pip value is how much money one pip is worth for the lot size you trade. This calculator multiplies your lot size by the value of a pip per standard lot, and also shows the result in Pakistani rupees using the rate you enter.
Why it matters
Price moves are quoted in pips, but your account is in money. The pip value is the bridge between the two. Without it you cannot tell whether a 30 pip stop loss costs you $3 or $300.
It also helps you feel how fast your account can move. At $10 per pip, a 50 pip move changes your balance by $500.
Why traders use it
Traders check it when they plan a trade and need to turn a stop loss in pips into a money amount. It is also the number you feed into a position size calculator. Traders in Pakistan often think in rupees, which is why the tool shows the PKR value too. Type in the current USD to PKR rate, because the tool does not look it up for you.
How important is it?
You need it, but mostly as an input to something else. Nobody has to memorize pip values, and your trading platform will show them. The real risk is using the wrong value in your sizing, so it is worth checking it once for each instrument you trade.
Worked example
With the defaults, one standard lot is worth $10 per pip. At a rate of 280 rupees per dollar, that is Rs 2,800 per pip.
Trade 0.1 lots (a mini lot) and the value drops to $1 per pip, so a 25 pip move is worth $25. Trade 0.01 lots and one pip is worth about $0.10.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every pair pays $10 per pip per standard lot. That is only true for some pairs, and it changes with the exchange rate for others.
- Mixing up pips and points. Many brokers quote a fifth decimal, which is a tenth of a pip. On those platforms one pip equals 10 points.
- Using an old PKR rate. The rupee value is only as good as the rate you type in.
- Forgetting that gold, indices and crypto do not use pips the same way as currency pairs.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pip in forex?
It is the smallest price step that traders usually count. For most pairs one pip is 0.0001, and for yen pairs it is 0.01.
How much is 1 pip on a 0.01 micro lot in USD and PKR?
On major USD pairs like EUR/USD, 1 pip on a 0.01 micro lot is $0.10 USD. At an exchange rate of 280 PKR per USD, 1 pip on a 0.01 lot equals Rs 28 PKR.
Why is the pip value for USD/JPY not $10?
The pip is 0.01 and the profit is first made in yen. It is then converted into dollars at the current rate, so the value changes as the price changes.
Does this tool fetch the live USD to PKR rate?
No. You enter the rate yourself, which lets you use your own bank, card, or local exchange rate.
